Engineered Flooring & More

Forests have been the called “the green lungs of the earth”. They help the planet breathe by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and replacing it with oxygen.

But that’s not all. Forests also influence the world’s climate patterns, along with the water cycle and air quality. Trees and forests also act like the earth’s air conditioning system. They help to counteract global warming.

So it is important to protect the earth’s forests. Which is why we at MFS flooring in Sydney are pleased to provide Australian consumers with eco-friendly French Oak.

What Makes French Oak an Earth-Friendly Timber?

It’s grown in sustainably-managed plantation forests that conform to the strict standards required under the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or PEFC for short.

The PEFC is an international non-government, non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting sustainable forestry management practices through a system of independent third-party certification. They are concerned with every step in the forest supply chain, to ensure that all forestry products abide by the highest ecological, ethical and social standards.

Timber from these forests has been produced in accordance with PEFC’s globally recognised Sustainability Benchmarks. Best sustainable forestry practices, in other words, from the world’s leading forest certification organization.

“In order to provide assurances that wood and wood-based products originate from sustainably managed forests, PEFC promotes Chain of Custody certification.” You can read more about this at www.pefc.org

Why Is French Oak (European Oak) So Popular?

Over the centuries European Oak has been prized for building ships, making fine furniture and creating barrels, as well as flooring. In fact, it has been described as the most desirable flooring available. Its wide popularity for projects requiring quality timber has arisen from its characteristics:

EASY to work with

French Oak is easy to work with, and that’s a significant advantage for craftsmen and trades people.

High Density

Because of its high density, it is a strong and durable timber with good wear characteristics. As such it’s valued by shipwrights as well as flooring specialists.

Slow Growth Rate

Due to its slow growth rate, French Oak has natural variations within its grain patterns that make it more attractive than other timbers.

High Tannin Levels

The high tannin levels in French Oak (which come from the soil and growing conditions in France) make it resistant to fungal attacks and insects.

Now Let's Look at Why Engineered Boards Are More Eco-Friendly.

Engineered floor boards have an “engineered” base that is constructed by bonding several layers of plantation plywood in different directions to give it greater strength. Only the top layer is from a slow-growth hardwood, French Oak in this case. Contrast that with solid boards where the entire board has come from a slow-growing forests. Engineered boards consist mostly of sustainable plantation plywood, and as such they are more earth-friendly than solid oak flooring.
